Mouse Control Guidelines

Mice Health and Safety Risks

Mice are known carriers of diseases that can spread to humans through their droppings, urine, and saliva. When they infest homes and buildings, this can cause the spread of this bacteria, risking it infecting residents.

Leptospirosis is one of the most frequent health concerns associated with mice and, if contracted, can result in a serious sickness. Their droppings can also include salmonella and hantavirus, two hazardous infections that can contaminate food and cause respiratory issues.

Aside from health risks, mice can cause significant damage to a property. They frequently chew on electrical cables, which raises the possibility of electrical fires and can result in costly repairs.

Mice also gnaw through wood, plasterboard, and insulation, necessitating expensive repairs. Their nesting habits have the potential to clog ventilation systems and affect air quality, impacting your home life.

Mouse Control FAQ’s

Mice are small rodents with pointed snouts, long, scaly tails and furry, round bodies. While often confused with rats, mice are much smaller mammals and can come in many different shapes and sizes.

Although small, they are highly adaptable rodents capable of living in a wide variety of dwellings. They can live in any terrain in any country, burrowing underground and foraging throughout the night. Their nocturnal nature and burrowing tendencies emerged because of their many predators. Mice are the prey of cats, owls, lizards, foxes and, of course, humans.

Before answering this, we must first distinguish between wild and domesticated mice (also known as the ‘house mouse’). Breeds of wild mice found in the UK, such as the bank vole, field vole and water vole, can often carry diseases harmful to humans.

These diseases include typhus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and even the bacteria responsible for the Plague (Yersinia pestis). This harmful bacterium can affect humans if they breathe in rodent urine, touch mice and their nesting materials or suffer rodent bites.

Domesticated mice, however, are not dangerous. The average house mouse has been bred in captivity and does not contain any of the harmful diseases carried by wild mice.

Do you think you have a mouse infestation? Look out for rodents droppings around food cupboards and food preparation areas. Their droppings are shiny, black pellets that measure between ½ and ¾ of an inch long.

Are you suddenly noticing a lot of shredded paper, plant matter or fabric? These are nesting materials and can be another sign of infestation. If you notice stale smells around your home in dark areas or identify holes in the floor or walls, these could be entry points for mice to enter your home.

If you do not get help for your mice infestation, they can destroy parts of your home. For example, your clothes, plants, rugs and blankets may get gnawed to create nesting materials.

Not only this, but they can destroy the insulation inside your walls, which will be costly to replace. Mice have teeth that are constantly growing. If they do not chew to shorten their teeth, their mouth will be restricted, and they will die.

That’s why mice chew through anything: rubber, wood, electrical wires, aluminium and even gas wires. They will gnaw but not ingest, leaving your home in disarray and your family in danger of contracting dangerous bacterium.
